Branches, brush, leaves, hedge trimmings, stumps, logs, sod, soil, gravel, mulch, old fencing, deck boards, landscape timbers and pavers. Keep green waste and general debris in separate containers where you can: a mixed load of leaves and drywall cannot go to a landfill in Michigan, and a load of clean brush composts for less. Keep hazardous items out: pesticides, pool chemicals and fuel go to Ingham County’s household hazardous waste drop-off, not the container.
The City carts and when a container makes sense
The City of Lansing collects yard waste in carts and bags on its regular schedule, and that is enough for a normal weekend’s trimming. A container makes sense when the pile would take months to clear a cart at a time, when you have stumps, sod or soil the carts will not take, or when the job has to be done this week. Bulk pickup through the City is by appointment and residential only, at $33 for the first item and $16.50 for each additional item, and it excludes building materials, concrete and rocks.
